It’s the sound of a song you half remember. A glimpse of a now scratched record. You pause, reaching into the dark recess of memory, returning with the sensation you’ve forgotten what you once knew… until you realize: there was no recollection to be found. Sleepy Jean’s spaghetti western infused Americana reimagines the sounds of yesteryear in a blend all their own.
Hailing from Welland, Ontario, Sleepy Jean is the moniker/alter-ego of singer-songwriter Katey Gatta. Their debut EP, Idle Hands, amassed over 100,000 cumulative streams on a purely DIY release. Now armed with her backing band, the Deadstock Three (featuring members of TALK, Cat Clyde’s Shitbats & alumni of Great Lake Swimmers, Jill Barber & Deep Dark Woods), Sleepy is set to release her debut full length effort, Shoot Me in a Dream, in July 2023.
Praise for “Shoot Me in a Dream”
We think of Hope Sandoval at the time of Mazzy Star (in How Soon), of the Julee Cruise of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks (No Tomorrow), even of Priscilla Paris and her silted timbre from the first Spector era (Lonely As I Can Be)
Sylvain Cormier, Le Devoir
Conjuring up elements of Nancy Sinatra and your favorite Tarantino flick, Sleepy Jean delivers a driving, lushly arranged throwback track titled “Six Feet Deep (with love)” that still brings plenty of fresh ideas to the table. Dedication to the craft is evident in the song’s energetic and tight performance, which works to support the harrowing story lurking beneath.

It’s not that often you hear vocals that blend Amy Winehouse’s soul, Tami Neilson’s tears and Dusty Springfield’s passion, but listen to Sleepy Jean‘s Once Held My Heart and be enchanted (goosebumps alert at 1:55).

Praise for “Idle Hands”
With a passionate introspective lyrical vision atop a cinematographic lustre, Sleepy Jean professes a bygone meets modern flair of new Americana for dreamers.

[How’s it All Gonna End’s last line]… highlights Jean’s vocal aesthetic that is incredibly self aware, darkly drawn, confident, empowered, sardonic and drop dead gorgeous in its’ ability to tell stories and pull you into them fully.

… the expressiveness of her voice goes a little deeper than the others, she shifts from whispering, yelling, crying, and truly singing.

Recorded over the course of a year with engineer/producer Dajaun Martineau (Kathleen Edwards, Lydia Ainsworth, Rob Moir), Shoot Me in a Dream aims to capture the spirit of a Tarantino soundtrack. Paying homage to icons like Les Paul, Nancy Sinatra & Dusty Springfield, the LP is equally inspired by the alt-country, surf rock and pop standards of the 1960’s. Featuring horn performances from Bryden Baird (Bahamas, Feist) and additional mixes from Kenneth Roy Meehan (Daniel Romano, Kacy & Clayton, Julianna Riolino), the 11 song effort stretches across space, time and genre to nod at the bygone eras that inspired its’ creation.
With support slots for Serena Ryder, Jim Cuddy, Sarah Slean, the Sadies, Great Lake Swimmers & Jeremie Albino, inclusion in Medicine Hat’s Tongue on Post Festival, London’s inaugural Aeolian Jazz Festival and Uxbridge’s Springtide Music Festival, as well as a healthy touring schedule around Southern Ontario – Sleepy Jean and the Deadstock Three are set to bring their brand of nostalgia into any ears open enough to listen. Sleepy Jean & the Deadstock Three are Katey Gatta, Dan Serre, Waylon Glintz & Marshall Bureau.
